# Work Summary: Inquiry Management Endpoints Implementation
**Date:** 2024-01-13
**Session Duration:** ~1 hour
**Status:** ✅ Complete

## Overview
Implemented complete REST API endpoints for managing inquiries (human-in-the-loop interactions) in the Attune automation platform. Inquiries enable workflows to pause and request user input before continuing, supporting approval workflows, data collection, and interactive automation.

## What Was Accomplished
### 1. Created Inquiry Data Transfer Objects (DTOs)
**File:** `crates/api/src/dto/inquiry.rs`
- **InquiryResponse**: Full inquiry details for single record retrieval
- **InquirySummary**: Condensed view for list endpoints
- **CreateInquiryRequest**: Request payload for creating new inquiries
- **UpdateInquiryRequest**: Request payload for updating inquiries
- **RespondToInquiryRequest**: Specialized payload for user responses
- **InquiryQueryParams**: Query parameters with filtering and pagination
**Key Features:**
- Validation rules using `validator` crate
- Proper serialization/deserialization
- Clean conversion from domain models to DTOs
### 2. Implemented Inquiry Routes
**File:** `crates/api/src/routes/inquiries.rs`
Implemented 8 endpoints:
1. **GET /api/v1/inquiries** - List all inquiries with filtering
- Filter by status, execution, or assigned user
- Paginated results
2. **GET /api/v1/inquiries/:id** - Get specific inquiry details
3. **GET /api/v1/inquiries/status/:status** - Filter inquiries by status
- Supports: pending, responded, timeout, canceled
4. **GET /api/v1/executions/:execution_id/inquiries** - List inquiries for an execution
5. **POST /api/v1/inquiries** - Create new inquiry
- Validates execution exists
- Sets initial status to "pending"
6. **PUT /api/v1/inquiries/:id** - Update inquiry properties
7. **POST /api/v1/inquiries/:id/respond** - User response endpoint
- Only works on pending inquiries
- Enforces assignment (if inquiry assigned to specific user)
- Checks timeout expiration
- Automatically updates status to "responded"
- Sets responded_at timestamp
8. **DELETE /api/v1/inquiries/:id** - Delete inquiry
**Authentication:**
- All endpoints require JWT authentication via `RequireAuth` extractor
- Special authorization check for `/respond` endpoint based on assignment
### 3. Registered Routes
**Modified Files:**
- `crates/api/src/routes/mod.rs` - Added inquiry module export
- `crates/api/src/server.rs` - Registered inquiry routes in API router
- `crates/api/src/dto/mod.rs` - Exported inquiry DTOs
### 4. Created Comprehensive API Documentation

- Marked Inquiry Management API (section 2.8) as ✅ COMPLETE
- Updated "In Progress" section to reflect completion
- Listed all 8 implemented endpoints

## Technical Details
### Key Implementation Decisions
1. **Specialized Response Endpoint**: Created dedicated `/inquiries/:id/respond` endpoint for user-facing responses, separate from generic update endpoint for better API semantics
2. **Authorization Enforcement**: When inquiry is assigned to specific user, only that user can respond (enforced via JWT token validation)
3. **Timeout Handling**: Automatically checks and updates inquiry to timeout status if user attempts to respond after expiration
4. **Consistent Pagination**: Used project's standard `PaginationParams` pattern for consistency across all endpoints
5. **In-Memory Filtering**: Applied some filters (assigned_to) in memory after database query for simplicity (can be optimized with database queries later if needed)
### Code Quality
- ✅ Follows established patterns from other route modules
- ✅ Proper error handling with descriptive messages
- ✅ Input validation using `validator` crate
- ✅ Type-safe with proper Rust idioms
- ✅ Clean separation of concerns (DTOs, routes, repository layer)
- ✅ Comprehensive inline documentation
### Testing Status
- ✅ Compiles successfully with no errors
- ⚠️ Only compiler warnings (unused imports in other modules)
- ❌ No unit tests written yet (noted for future work)
- ❌ No integration tests written yet (noted for future work)

## Issues Encountered & Resolved
### 1. RequireAuth Import Error
**Problem:** Initially imported `RequireAuth` from `crate::middleware` but it's actually in `crate::auth`
**Solution:** Fixed import path to `use crate::auth::RequireAuth`
### 2. RequireAuth Structure Access
**Problem:** Tried to access `user.id` directly on `RequireAuth` but it's a wrapper type
**Solution:** Access through `user.0.identity_id()` method which unwraps the `AuthenticatedUser` and parses the ID
### 3. Type Inference Issues
**Problem:** Compiler couldn't infer closure parameter types in iterator chains
**Solution:** Used descriptive parameter names (`inquiry` instead of `i`) which helped Rust's type inference
### 4. Pagination Parameter Types
**Problem:** Initially defined custom `InquiryQueryParams` with `Option<u32>` for pagination fields, inconsistent with project standard
**Solution:** Used `PaginationParams` directly which has non-optional fields with defaults
### 5. Enum Variant Spelling
**Problem:** Used American spelling `Canceled` but enum uses British spelling `Cancelled`
**Solution:** Updated to match enum definition: `InquiryStatus::Cancelled`
