# Pack Registry Phase 3: Enhanced Installation Process

## Overview
|
|
|
|
Phase 3 enhanced the pack installation system with comprehensive metadata tracking, storage management, checksum generation, and improved error handling. This phase transforms the installation process from a basic file copy operation to a robust, auditable system with proper versioning and security validation.

## Objectives
|
|
|
|
1. ✅ Add installation metadata tracking (source, checksum, timestamp, user)
|
|
2. ✅ Implement proper pack storage management with versioning
|
|
3. ✅ Create CLI command for checksum generation
|
|
4. ✅ Enhance error handling with proper I/O error types
|
|
5. ✅ Support pack verification and integrity checking

## Implementation Details
|
|
|
|
### 1. Database Schema for Installation Metadata
|
|
|
|
**File:** `migrations/20260122000001_pack_installation_metadata.sql`
|
|
|
|
Created a new `pack_installation` table to track:
|
|
- Installation source information (type, URL, git ref)
|
|
- SHA256 checksums with verification status
|
|
- Installation metadata (installed by, method, timestamp)
|
|
- Storage location (file system path)
|
|
- Additional metadata (JSON field for flexibility)
|
|
|
|
**Key Features:**
|
|
- One-to-one relationship with `pack` table (unique constraint)
|
|
- Indexed for efficient queries by pack_id, source_type, and installation date
|
|
- Automatic timestamp management via triggers
|
|
- Cascading delete when pack is removed
|
|
|
|
### 2. Pack Installation Model & Repository
|
|
|
|
**Files:**
|
|
- `crates/common/src/models.rs` - Added `PackInstallation` and `CreatePackInstallation`
|
|
- `crates/common/src/repositories/pack_installation.rs` - Full CRUD repository
|
|
|
|
**Repository Features:**
|
|
- Create/read/update/delete operations
|

- Query by pack_id or installation_id
|
|
- List by source type
|
|
- Check existence
|

- Update checksum and metadata independently
|
|

### 3. Pack Storage Management
|
|
|
|
**File:** `crates/common/src/pack_registry/storage.rs`
|
|
|
|
New `PackStorage` utility providing:
|
|
|
|
**Core Functionality:**
|
|
- `get_pack_path()` - Resolve storage paths with optional versioning
|
|
- `install_pack()` - Move from temp to permanent storage
|
|
- `uninstall_pack()` - Remove pack from storage
|
|
- `is_installed()` - Check installation status
|
|
- `list_installed()` - Enumerate all installed packs
|
|
|
|
**Checksum Utilities:**
|
|
- `calculate_directory_checksum()` - SHA256 hash of entire pack directory
|
|
- Deterministic (sorted file order)
|
|
- Includes file paths in hash (structure integrity)
|
|
- Handles large files efficiently (8KB buffer)
|
|
- `calculate_file_checksum()` - SHA256 hash of single file
|
|
- `verify_checksum()` - Compare actual vs expected checksum
|
|
|
|
**Design Decisions:**
|
|
- Versioned storage: `<base_dir>/<pack_ref>-<version>/`
|
|
- Recursive directory hashing for tamper detection
|
|
- Atomic operations (remove old, copy new)
|
|
- Comprehensive error handling for I/O operations
|
|
|
|
### 4. Enhanced Error Handling
|
|
|
|
**File:** `crates/common/src/error.rs`
|
|
|
|
Added `Io(String)` variant to the `Error` enum:
|
|
- Dedicated error type for file system operations
|
|
- Helper function `Error::io()` for ergonomic construction
|
|
- Integrated into API error middleware
|
|
|
|
**Impact:**
|
|
- Clearer error messages for storage failures
|
|
- Better distinction between database and file system errors
|
|
- Consistent error handling across services
|

### 5. CLI Checksum Command
|
|
|
|
**File:** `crates/cli/src/commands/pack.rs`

New command: `attune pack checksum <path>`
|

**Features:**
|
|
- Calculate SHA256 checksum for pack directories or archives
|
|
- Multiple output formats (table, JSON, YAML)

- `--json` flag generates registry index entry template

- Automatic format detection (directory vs archive)
|
|
- Copy-paste ready output for pack authors
|
|

### 6. Enhanced Installation Flow
|
|
|
|
**File:** `crates/api/src/routes/packs.rs`
|
|
|
|
Updated `install_pack()` endpoint to:
|
|
|
|
1. Install to temporary location (existing behavior)
|
|
2. Register pack in database
|
|
3. **NEW:** Move to permanent versioned storage via `PackStorage`
|
|
4. **NEW:** Calculate checksum of installed pack
|
|
5. **NEW:** Store installation metadata in `pack_installation` table
|
|
6. **NEW:** Track source, checksum, installer, method, and timestamp
|
|
7. Clean up temporary files
|
|
|
|
**Metadata Tracked:**
|
|
- `source_type`: git, archive, local_directory, local_archive, registry
|
|
- `source_url`: Original URL or path
|
|
- `source_ref`: Git ref or registry version
|
|
- `checksum`: Calculated SHA256
|
|
- `checksum_verified`: Whether checksum matched expected value
|
|
- `installed_by`: User identity ID
|
|
- `installation_method`: "api", "cli", or "manual"
|
|
- `storage_path`: Final file system location
|
|
- `meta`: Additional context (force flag, skip_tests, etc.)
|
|
|
|
### 7. Dependencies
|
|
|
|
**File:** `Cargo.toml` (workspace and common crate)
|
|
|
|
Added `walkdir = "2.4"` for recursive directory traversal:
|
|
- Used in checksum calculation
|
|
- Ensures deterministic file ordering
|
|
- Efficient iteration over large pack directories
|
|

- Packs installed to: `{packs_base_dir}/{pack_ref}-{version}/`
|
|
- Checksums automatically calculated and verified
|
|
- Metadata always tracked in database
|
|
|

## Performance Considerations

- Large packs (>100MB) may take 1-5 seconds
|

- Uses 8KB buffer for memory efficiency

- Background calculation possible for async API

|
|
- Atomic moves minimize downtime
|
|
- Temp directory on same filesystem for fast moves
|
|
- Cleanup handled gracefully on failure
|
|
