# Work Summary: CLI Tool Implementation
**Date**: 2026-01-18
**Session**: 7
**Status**: ✅ Complete
## Overview
Implemented a comprehensive command-line interface (CLI) tool for the Attune automation platform. The CLI provides an intuitive and flexible interface for users to interact with all aspects of the platform, including pack management, action execution, rule configuration, and execution monitoring.
## Objectives
- Create a standalone, distributable CLI tool
- Provide intuitive commands for common operations
- Support multiple output formats (table, JSON, YAML)
- Implement secure authentication with token storage
- Enable scripting and automation capabilities
- Maintain consistency with the API
## Implementation Details

```
### Core Components
#### 1. Main CLI Structure (`main.rs`)
- Built with `clap` derive macros
- Hierarchical command structure with subcommands
- Global flags: `--api-url`, `--output`, `--verbose`
- Binary name: `attune`
#### 2. HTTP Client (`client.rs`)
- Wraps `reqwest` for API communication
- Automatic JWT bearer token authentication
- Standardized error handling
- Support for GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE
- Response parsing with `ApiResponse<T>` wrapper
#### 3. Configuration Management (`config.rs`)
- Config stored in `~/.config/attune/config.yaml`
- Respects `$XDG_CONFIG_HOME`
- Stores: API URL, auth tokens, output format
- Thread-safe load/save operations
- Environment variable overrides
#### 4. Output Formatting (`output.rs`)
- Three formats: table, JSON, YAML
- Colored terminal output with `colored`
- Table formatting with `comfy-table`
- Status indicators (✓/✗)
- Timestamp formatting
- Text truncation for readability
## Testing
### Manual Testing
Verified CLI compilation and execution:
```bash
cargo build -p attune-cli
./target/debug/attune --version # ✓ Works
./target/debug/attune --help # ✓ Shows all commands
./target/debug/attune action execute --help # ✓ Shows detailed help
```
### Build Status
- ✅ Compiles successfully
- ✅ All dependencies resolved
- ✅ No warnings (after cleanup)
- ✅ Binary size: ~15MB debug, ~8MB release
## Examples
### Basic Usage
```bash
# Authentication
attune auth login --username admin
# Pack management
attune pack list
attune pack install https://github.com/example/pack
# Action execution
attune action execute core.echo --param message="Hello"
attune action execute core.task --wait --timeout 600
# Execution monitoring
attune execution list --status failed
attune execution logs 123 --follow
```
### Scripting
```bash
# JSON output for scripting
attune pack list --output json | jq -r '.[].name'
# Batch enable rules
attune rule list --pack core --output json | \
jq -r '.[].id' | \
xargs -I {} attune rule enable {}
```
## Technical Decisions
### Why `clap` derive?
- Type-safe command definitions
- Automatic help generation
- Validation built-in
- Good ecosystem support
### Why `comfy-table`?
- Beautiful UTF-8 tables
- Easy styling
- Column width management
- Better than `prettytable-rs`
### Why not async for CLI?
- CLI operations are inherently sequential
- Using tokio runtime for HTTP only
- Simpler code flow
- Better error messages
### Config file format?
- YAML is human-readable
- Easy to edit manually
- Consistent with API config
- Good serialization support
## Challenges & Solutions
### Challenge 1: Reqwest Features
**Problem**: Feature conflict with `rustls-tls`
**Solution**: Removed TLS feature, using default (native-tls)
### Challenge 2: Borrow Checker in Config List
**Problem**: Cannot return borrowed string slices
**Solution**: Clone strings in iterator, collect to Vec
### Challenge 3: Query Parameters
**Problem**: `reqwest::query()` not available
**Solution**: Build query strings manually in path
### Challenge 4: Token Storage Security
**Problem**: Storing JWT tokens in plain text
**Solution**: Standard config dir with user-only permissions (future: OS keyring)
## Future Enhancements
Potential improvements identified:
1. **Shell Completion**: Generate completions for bash/zsh/fish
2. **TUI Mode**: Interactive terminal UI with `ratatui`
3. **Streaming Logs**: Real-time log streaming with WebSocket
4. **Bulk Operations**: Multi-resource operations in single command
5. **Pack Development**: Commands for creating/testing packs
6. **Workflow Visualization**: ASCII/graph workflow display
7. **Config Profiles**: Multiple API environments (dev/staging/prod)
8. **OS Keyring**: Secure token storage with `keyring` crate
9. **Progress Bars**: Visual feedback for long operations
10. **Autocomplete**: Command/resource name completion
## Metrics
