Pack Registry Phase 5: Integration, Testing, and Tools
Date: 2024-01-22
Phase: 5 of 5
Status: ✅ COMPLETE
Overview
Phase 5 completes the pack registry system by integrating all components, adding comprehensive tooling for pack maintainers, and preparing for end-to-end testing. This phase focuses on:
- Wiring progress reporting to CLI
- Integrating dependency validation into installation flow
- Adding registry index management tools
- Creating CI/CD integration examples
- Documenting testing requirements
Objectives
- Integration: Wire all Phase 4 features into working CLI and API workflows
- Tooling: Provide pack maintainers with tools for registry management
- Documentation: Create CI/CD integration guides
- Testing Preparation: Document comprehensive test scenarios
Implementation Details
1. CLI Progress Reporting Enhancement
Enhanced Install Output (crates/cli/src/commands/pack.rs):
- Added progress indicators with emoji symbols (✓, ⚠, ✗)
- Improved formatting with indentation
- Better messaging during installation process
- Added warning for skipped dependency validation
Example Output:
Installing pack from: https://github.com/org/pack.git (git)
Starting installation...
⚠ Dependency validation will be skipped
✓ Pack 'my-pack' installed successfully
Version: 1.0.0
ID: 42
✓ All tests passed
Tests: 15/15 passed
2. Dependency Validation Integration
API Integration (crates/api/src/routes/packs.rs):
- Added dependency validation after pack download
- Parses
pack.yamlto extract runtime and pack dependencies - Validates against available runtimes (Python, Node.js)
- Checks pack dependencies against installed packs
- Returns clear error messages on validation failure
Validation Flow:
Install Request → Download Pack → Parse pack.yaml →
Validate Runtime Deps → Validate Pack Deps →
Register Pack → Move to Storage → Store Metadata
CLI Flags:
--skip-deps: Skip dependency validation (not recommended)--skip-tests: Skip both tests and dependency validation
API Request DTO:
pub struct InstallPackRequest {
pub source: String,
pub ref_spec: Option<String>,
pub force: bool,
pub skip_tests: bool,
pub skip_deps: bool, // New field
}
Validation Logic:
// Extract runtime dependencies from pack.yaml
let mut runtime_deps: Vec<String> = Vec::new();
if let Some(python_version) = pack_yaml.get("python").and_then(|v| v.as_str()) {
runtime_deps.push(format!("python3>={}", python_version));
}
if let Some(nodejs_version) = pack_yaml.get("nodejs").and_then(|v| v.as_str()) {
runtime_deps.push(format!("nodejs>={}", nodejs_version));
}
// Extract pack dependencies
let pack_deps: Vec<(String, String)> = pack_yaml
.get("dependencies")
.and_then(|v| v.as_sequence())
.map(|seq| {
seq.iter()
.filter_map(|v| v.as_str().map(|s| (s.to_string(), "*".to_string())))
.collect()
})
.unwrap_or_default();
// Get installed packs from database
let installed_packs_list = PackRepository::list(&state.db).await?;
let installed_packs: HashMap<String, String> = installed_packs_list
.into_iter()
.map(|p| (p.r#ref, p.version))
.collect();
// Validate
match validator.validate(&runtime_deps, &pack_deps, &installed_packs).await {
Ok(validation) => {
if !validation.valid {
return Err(ApiError::BadRequest(format!(
"Pack dependency validation failed:\n - {}",
validation.errors.join("\n - ")
)));
}
}
Err(e) => {
return Err(ApiError::InternalServerError(format!(
"Failed to validate dependencies: {}",
e
)));
}
}
3. Registry Index Management Tools
Tool 1: attune pack index-update
Purpose: Update an existing registry index file with a new pack entry
Usage:
attune pack index-update \
--index /path/to/index.json \
/path/to/pack \
--git-url https://github.com/org/pack \
--git-ref v1.0.0 \
--archive-url https://example.com/pack-1.0.0.tar.gz \
--update
Features:
- Updates existing entries or adds new ones
- Automatically calculates pack checksum
- Validates pack.yaml format
- Prevents duplicate entries (unless
--updateis used) - Supports both JSON and YAML output formats
Implementation (crates/cli/src/commands/pack_index.rs):
pub async fn handle_index_update(
index_path: String,
pack_path: String,
git_url: Option<String>,
git_ref: Option<String>,
archive_url: Option<String>,
update: bool,
output_format: OutputFormat,
) -> Result<()>
Workflow:
- Load existing index.json
- Parse pack.yaml from pack directory
- Check for existing entry
- Calculate checksum
- Build install sources
- Update or add entry
- Write updated index back to file
Tool 2: attune pack index-merge
Purpose: Merge multiple registry index files into one
Usage:
attune pack index-merge \
--output merged-index.json \
registry1/index.json \
registry2/index.json \
registry3/index.json \
--force
Features:
- Merges multiple registry sources
- Deduplicates pack entries by ref
- Keeps latest version when conflicts occur
- Tracks merge statistics
- Supports force overwrite of output file
Implementation:
pub async fn handle_index_merge(
output_path: String,
input_paths: Vec<String>,
force: bool,
output_format: OutputFormat,
) -> Result<()>
Deduplication Logic:
// Track all packs by ref
let mut packs_map: HashMap<String, JsonValue> = HashMap::new();
for input_path in &input_paths {
let index: JsonValue = load_index(input_path)?;
let packs = index.get("packs").and_then(|p| p.as_array())?;
for pack in packs {
let pack_ref = pack.get("ref").and_then(|r| r.as_str())?;
if packs_map.contains_key(pack_ref) {
// Keep latest version
let existing_version = packs_map[pack_ref].get("version")?;
let new_version = pack.get("version")?;
if new_version > existing_version {
packs_map.insert(pack_ref.to_string(), pack.clone());
}
} else {
packs_map.insert(pack_ref.to_string(), pack.clone());
}
}
}

API Changes
Updated DTOs
InstallPackRequest (crates/api/src/dto/pack.rs):
pub struct InstallPackRequest {
pub source: String,
pub ref_spec: Option<String>,
pub force: bool,
pub skip_tests: bool,
pub skip_deps: bool, // NEW: Skip dependency validation
}
Updated Routes
install_pack (crates/api/src/routes/packs.rs):
- Added dependency validation after download
- Parses pack.yaml for dependencies
- Validates runtime and pack dependencies
- Returns detailed error messages on failure
Configuration
No new configuration required. Uses existing:
pack_registryconfiguration for registry URLspacks_base_dirfor storage location- Database connection for installed packs lookup
Security Considerations
-
Registry Security:
- Use separate tokens for registry write access
- Implement token rotation policies
- Audit registry changes
-
Dependency Validation:
- Prevents installation of incompatible packs
- Runtime detection may execute commands (python3 --version, node --version)
- Consider sandboxing in production
-
Checksum Verification:
- Always verify checksums in production
- Use SHA256 for tamper detection
- Store checksums in installation metadata
-
Archive Hosting:
- Use HTTPS for archive downloads
- Implement access controls on archive storage
- Consider signing archives (future enhancement)
Known Limitations
-
Progress Reporting:
- CLI progress is basic (no streaming from API yet)
- API doesn't support Server-Sent Events for real-time progress
- Future: Add SSE or WebSocket support
-
Dependency Resolution:
- No transitive dependency resolution
- No dependency conflict detection
- Pack dependencies use wildcard versions
- Future: Implement proper dependency solver
-
Version Comparison:
- Index merge uses string comparison for versions
- Should use proper semver parsing
- Future: Use semver crate for version comparison
-
Registry Index:
- No index signing or verification
- No registry metadata (description, URL, etc.)
- Future: Add index v2 format with metadata
Performance Considerations
-
Index Operations:
- In-memory operations (suitable for thousands of packs)
- Consider streaming for very large indexes
- Index merge is O(n) for n total packs
-
Dependency Validation:
- Runtime version detection spawns processes
- Results are cached per validator instance
- Consider persistent caching across requests
-
Database Queries:
- Loads all packs for dependency checking
- Should add pagination/filtering for large deployments
- Consider caching installed pack list
Migration Notes
For Existing Deployments
-
API Changes:
InstallPackRequesthas new optional field (skip_deps)- Default:
false(validates dependencies) - Backward compatible (field is optional with default)
- Default:
-
CLI Changes: New commands added
attune pack index-updateattune pack index-merge- Existing commands unchanged
-
Behavior Changes:
- Pack installation now validates dependencies by default
- Use
--skip-depsto restore previous behavior --skip-testsnow also skips dependency validation
Rollback Strategy
If issues arise:
- Use
--skip-depsflag to bypass validation - Revert API changes (remove validation code)
- Old CLI versions remain compatible (skip_deps defaults to false)
