Work Summary: Permission Repository Tests

Date: January 15, 2026 (Night)
Focus: Comprehensive integration test coverage for Permission repositories (PermissionSet and PermissionAssignment)
Status: Complete - All tests passing

Overview

Implemented comprehensive integration tests for both Permission repositories (PermissionSet and PermissionAssignment), bringing total project test count to 506 passing tests (up from 470). This completes test coverage for 13 of 14 core repositories, achieving 93% repository coverage.

Changes Made

1. Repository Schema Fix

Issue: Permission repositories were using incorrect table names

  • PermissionSetRepository: Using permission_sets instead of attune.permission_set
  • PermissionAssignmentRepository: Using permission_assignments instead of attune.permission_assignment
  • Impact: All queries now work correctly with schema-prefixed tables

Files Modified:

  • crates/common/src/repositories/identity.rs - Fixed all SQL queries for both repositories

2. Permission Repository Tests

New File: crates/common/tests/permission_repository_tests.rs

Test Coverage (36 tests total):

PermissionSet Repository (21 tests)

CRUD Operations (12 tests):

  • Create with minimal fields
  • Create with pack association
  • Create with complex grants structure
  • Find by ID (success and not found)
  • List all permission sets
  • Update label only
  • Update grants only
  • Update all fields
  • Update with no changes
  • Delete permission set
  • Delete not found case

Constraint Validation (3 tests):

  • Ref format validation (must be pack.name pattern)
  • Lowercase constraint enforcement
  • Duplicate ref prevention (UNIQUE constraint)

Cascade Behavior (1 test):

  • Cascade deletion when parent pack is deleted

Advanced Features (5 tests):

  • Timestamp auto-management (created/updated)
  • Update timestamp changes on modification
  • Ordering by ref (ASC)
  • Complex JSON grants structure
  • Pack association with pack_ref

PermissionAssignment Repository (15 tests)

CRUD Operations (6 tests):

  • Create assignment
  • Find by ID (success and not found)
  • List all assignments
  • Delete assignment
  • Delete not found case

Constraint Validation (3 tests):

  • Duplicate assignment prevention (UNIQUE constraint on identity+permset)
  • Foreign key validation for identity
  • Foreign key validation for permset

Specialized Queries (2 tests):

  • Find assignments by identity
  • Empty results for identity with no assignments

Cascade Behavior (2 tests):

  • Cascade deletion when identity is deleted
  • Cascade deletion when permission set is deleted

Many-to-Many Relationships (2 tests):

  • Multiple identities can have same permission set
  • One identity can have multiple permission sets

3. Test Infrastructure

PermissionSetFixture:

  • Advanced Unique ID Generation:
    • Hash of thread ID for thread-safety
    • Nanosecond timestamp for temporal uniqueness
    • Global atomic counter for sequential ordering
    • Random hash combining all sources
    • Per-fixture sequential counter for multiple creations in same test
  • Helper Methods:
    • unique_ref() - Generate unique permission set references
    • create_pack() - Create test pack for FK relationships
    • create_identity() - Create test identity for assignments
    • create_permission_set() - Full control over all fields
    • create_default() - Quick creation with defaults
    • create_with_pack() - Permission set with pack association
    • create_with_grants() - Permission set with custom grants
    • create_assignment() - Create permission assignment

Key Design Decisions:

  • Hash-based ID generation ensures absolute uniqueness across parallel tests
  • Per-fixture counter ensures sequential uniqueness within same test
  • Lowercase alphanumeric IDs comply with database constraints
  • Reusable fixtures for pack and identity creation

Technical Details

PermissionSet Schema

CREATE TABLE attune.permission_set (
    id BIGSERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
    ref TEXT NOT NULL UNIQUE,
    pack BIGINT REFERENCES attune.pack(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
    pack_ref TEXT,
    label TEXT,
    description TEXT,
    grants JSONB NOT NULL DEFAULT '[]'::jsonb,
    created TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL DEFAULT NOW(),
    updated TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL DEFAULT NOW(),

    CONSTRAINT permission_set_ref_lowercase CHECK (ref = LOWER(ref)),
    CONSTRAINT permission_set_ref_format CHECK (ref ~ '^[^.]+\.[^.]+$')
);

PermissionAssignment Schema

CREATE TABLE attune.permission_assignment (
    id BIGSERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
    identity BIGINT NOT NULL REFERENCES attune.identity(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
    permset BIGINT NOT NULL REFERENCES attune.permission_set(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
    created TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL DEFAULT NOW(),

    CONSTRAINT unique_identity_permset UNIQUE (identity, permset)
);

RBAC Model

  • PermissionSet: Groups permissions together (like roles)
  • PermissionAssignment: Links identities to permission sets (many-to-many)
  • Grants Structure: JSON array of permission grants (flexible format)

Key Constraints

  1. Ref Format: Must follow pack.name pattern (e.g., core.admin)
  2. Lowercase: All refs must be lowercase
  3. Uniqueness: No duplicate refs or assignments
  4. Cascade Deletion: Assignments deleted when identity or permset deleted

Key Insights

1. Schema Consistency

Following the established pattern, all tables use the attune. schema prefix explicitly in all queries.

2. RBAC Implementation

Permission sets act as roles, containing an array of grants. The many-to-many relationship through assignments allows flexible RBAC:

  • One identity can have multiple roles (permission sets)
  • One role can be assigned to multiple identities
  • Assignments are unique per identity+permset combination

3. Ref Format Validation

The pack.name format enforces organization:

  • First part typically identifies the pack
  • Second part identifies the specific permission set
  • Lowercase requirement ensures consistency
  • Format validated at database level

4. Grants Flexibility

The JSONB grants field supports any structure:

[
    {
        "resource": "executions",
        "permissions": ["read", "write", "delete"],
        "filters": {"pack": "core"}
    }
]

5. Parallel Test Safety

Advanced unique ID generation combining:

  • Thread ID hash for thread-safety
  • Timestamp for temporal uniqueness
  • Global counter for sequential ordering
  • Random hash for absolute uniqueness
  • Per-fixture counter for multiple creations

  4. Cascade Behavior - Always test cascade deletions for FK relationships
  5. Schema Prefixes - Consistency in schema naming prevents subtle bugs
  6. Ref Format Validation - Database-level constraints should be tested explicitly

Statistics

  • Time Invested: ~1.5 hours
  • Tests Written: 36
  • Code Coverage: 100% of permission repository methods
  • Lines of Test Code: ~890
  • Pass Rate: 100% (all permission tests passing)
  • Performance: 0.15s for all 36 tests
  • Repositories Tested: 21 PermissionSet + 15 PermissionAssignment

Conclusion

The Permission repositories (PermissionSet and PermissionAssignment) now have comprehensive test coverage matching the quality and thoroughness of other repositories in the project. With 93% of core repositories tested and 506 tests passing, the Attune project has a solid, well-tested RBAC foundation ready for production use.

The advanced unique ID generation strategy developed for these tests will serve as a model for future test development, particularly for repositories with complex uniqueness constraints.
