Rule Repository Tests Implementation

Date: January 14, 2026
Session Duration: ~1 hour
Status: COMPLETE

Overview

Implemented comprehensive integration tests for the Rule repository, completing the test coverage for core automation components. The Rule repository is critical as it connects triggers to actions with conditional logic, forming the heart of the automation engine.

What Was Accomplished

1. Fixed Rule Repository Implementation

Issues Found and Fixed:

  • All queries used rules instead of attune.rule (missing schema prefix)
  • No error handling for unique constraint violations
  • Missing proper Error type imports

Changes Made:

  • Updated all 9 SQL queries to use attune.rule schema prefix
  • Added Error::already_exists() for duplicate ref violations
  • Ensured consistent error handling across all operations

Files Modified:

  • crates/common/src/repositories/rule.rs - Fixed schema prefixes and error handling

2. Added Test Fixtures

New Helper Functions:

  • unique_rule_name() - Generate unique rule names for parallel tests
  • TriggerFixture - Complete fixture builder for creating test triggers
    • Supports both pack-scoped and core triggers
    • new() and new_unique() constructors
    • Builder methods: with_label(), with_enabled(), with_param_schema(), etc.

Files Modified:

  • crates/common/tests/helpers.rs - Added TriggerFixture and rule helpers

Technical Details

Rule Model Structure

Rules connect triggers to actions with conditional logic:

  • Required Fields: ref, pack, label, description, action, trigger, conditions, enabled
  • Relationships:
    • Belongs to Pack (CASCADE DELETE)
    • References Action (NOT NULL)
    • References Trigger (NOT NULL)
  • Constraints:
    • Unique ref (format: pack.name)
    • Lowercase ref enforcement
    • Valid JSON conditions

Test Patterns Established

  1. Unique Fixture Generation: All tests use new_unique() for parallel safety
  2. Relationship Setup: Tests create Pack → Action + Trigger → Rule
  3. Error Validation: Proper Error enum pattern matching
  4. JSON Handling: Tests verify complex condition structures
  5. Cascade Testing: Verify foreign key constraints

Key Learnings

  1. Error Handling Pattern: Use Error::already_exists("Entity", "field", &value)
  2. Schema Prefixes: Always use attune.table_name in queries
  3. Test Dependencies: Rules require Pack, Action, and Trigger fixtures
  4. Fixture Helpers: Building comprehensive fixtures accelerates test writing

Impact

Testing Coverage

  • 5 of 14 repositories now have full test coverage
  • Core automation flow (Pack → Action/Trigger → Rule) fully tested
  • 195/252 project tests are in common library (77%)

Code Quality

  • Rule repository queries all use correct schema prefixes
  • Consistent error handling across all repositories
  • All database constraints validated by tests

Development Velocity

  • Clear patterns for future repository tests
  • Comprehensive fixtures reduce test setup time
  • Parallel test execution remains fast (~0.14s for 26 tests)

Next Steps

Immediate (This Week)

  1. Execution Repository Tests - Critical for workflow tracking

    • Covers execution state, parent-child relationships, status transitions
    • Needed for Executor service implementation
    • Estimated: 2-3 hours
  2. Event & Enforcement Repository Tests - Automation event flow

    • Covers trigger events and rule enforcement instances
    • Links to execution chain
    • Estimated: 2-3 hours

Near-Term (Next Week)

Conclusion

The Rule repository is now fully tested with 26 comprehensive integration tests covering all CRUD operations, specialized queries, constraints, and error handling. Combined with Identity, Trigger, Pack, and Action repository tests, we now have solid test coverage for the core automation components.

Test Progress:

  • Started session: 226 tests passing
  • Ended session: 252 tests passing (+26 new tests, +11.5%)
  • Common library: 195 tests (66 unit + 23 migration + 106 repository)

The pattern established for repository testing continues to accelerate development - each new repository test suite takes less time as fixtures and patterns are refined. The project is well-positioned to complete Execution repository tests next, which will unblock Executor service implementation.
