Pack Registry Phase 4: Dependency Validation & Tools

Date: 2024-01-22
Status: Completed
Related: Phases 1-3 (Registry Infrastructure, Installation Sources, Enhanced Installation)

Overview

Phase 4 adds critical dependency validation capabilities, progress reporting infrastructure, and pack authoring tools to complete the pack registry system. This phase ensures packs can validate their runtime and pack dependencies before installation, provides real-time feedback during installation, and gives pack authors the tools they need to publish packs to registries.

Objectives

  1. Implement runtime dependency validation (Python, Node.js, shell versions)
  2. Implement pack dependency validation with semver support
  3. Add progress reporting infrastructure to installer
  4. Create index entry generation tool for pack authors
  5. 🔄 Comprehensive integration testing (in progress)

Implementation Details

1. Dependency Validation System

File: crates/common/src/pack_registry/dependency.rs (520 lines)

Created a comprehensive dependency validation system with:

Runtime Dependency Validation

Supported Runtimes:

  • python3 / python - Detects Python version (2.x, 3.x)
  • nodejs / node - Detects Node.js version
  • shell / bash / sh - Detects shell version

Version Detection:

  • Executes --version commands to detect installed versions
  • Caches results to avoid repeated system calls
  • Parses version strings to extract semantic versions

Version Constraints:

  • >=3.8 - Greater than or equal to
  • <=4.0 - Less than or equal to
  • >3.7 - Greater than
  • <4.0 - Less than
  • =3.9 - Exact match
  • ^3.8.0 - Caret (compatible with version)
    • ^1.2.3 := >=1.2.3 <2.0.0
    • ^0.2.3 := >=0.2.3 <0.3.0
  • ~3.8.0 - Tilde (approximately equivalent)
    • ~1.2.3 := >=1.2.3 <1.3.0

Example Usage:

let mut validator = DependencyValidator::new();

let runtime_deps = vec![
    "python3>=3.8".to_string(),
    "nodejs^14.0.0".to_string(),
];

let validation = validator.validate(&runtime_deps, &[], &HashMap::new()).await?;

if !validation.valid {
    for error in &validation.errors {
        println!("Error: {}", error);
    }
}

Pack Dependency Validation

Features:

  • Check if required packs are installed
  • Validate installed versions against constraints
  • Support semver version constraints (same operators as runtime deps)
  • Report missing or incompatible pack versions

Example:

let pack_deps = vec![
    ("core".to_string(), "^1.0.0".to_string()),
    ("slack".to_string(), ">=2.1.0".to_string()),
];

let installed_packs = HashMap::from([
    ("core".to_string(), "1.2.3".to_string()),
    ("slack".to_string(), "2.5.0".to_string()),
]);

let validation = validator.validate(&[], &pack_deps, &installed_packs).await?;

Validation Results

Structured Output:

  • DependencyValidation - Overall result
  • RuntimeDepValidation - Per-runtime result
  • PackDepValidation - Per-pack result
  • All results are serializable (JSON/YAML)

Result Fields:

  • valid - Boolean indicating if all dependencies are satisfied
  • runtime_deps - List of runtime validation results
  • pack_deps - List of pack validation results
  • warnings - Non-blocking issues
  • errors - Blocking issues

2. Semver Version Handling

Implementation:

Version Parsing:

  • Parse versions to [major, minor, patch] arrays
  • Handle partial versions (1.0, 2)
  • Validate numeric components

Version Comparison:

  • Three-way comparison (-1, 0, 1)
  • Lexicographic ordering (major → minor → patch)
  • Comprehensive unit tests for all operators

Caret Constraints (^):

  • Compatible with version (allows updates that don't change leftmost non-zero digit)
  • ^1.2.3 allows >=1.2.3 <2.0.0
  • ^0.2.3 allows >=0.2.3 <0.3.0 (stricter for 0.x versions)
  • ^0.0.3 allows only =0.0.3 (exact match for 0.0.x)

Tilde Constraints (~):

  • Approximately equivalent to version
  • ~1.2.3 allows >=1.2.3 <1.3.0
  • Allows patch-level changes only

3. Progress Reporting Infrastructure

File: crates/common/src/pack_registry/installer.rs (updated)

Added progress reporting infrastructure to PackInstaller:

Progress Event Types:

pub enum ProgressEvent {
    StepStarted { step: String, message: String },
    StepCompleted { step: String, message: String },
    Downloading { url: String, downloaded_bytes: u64, total_bytes: Option<u64> },
    Extracting { file: String },
    Verifying { message: String },
    Warning { message: String },
    Info { message: String },
}

Callback System:

  • ProgressCallback - Arc-wrapped callback function
  • Thread-safe (Send + Sync)
  • Optional (doesn't affect functionality if not set)

Integration:

let installer = PackInstaller::new(temp_dir, config)
    .await?
    .with_progress_callback(Arc::new(|event| {
        match event {
            ProgressEvent::StepStarted { step, message } => {
                println!("⏳ {}: {}", step, message);
            }
            ProgressEvent::Downloading { url, downloaded_bytes, total_bytes } => {
                if let Some(total) = total_bytes {
                    let percent = (downloaded_bytes * 100) / total;
                    println!("📥 {}% downloaded", percent);
                }
            }
            _ => {}
        }
    }));

Current Implementation:

  • Infrastructure in place
  • Progress events defined
  • Initial integration in git clone step
  • Ready for CLI and API integration

4. Index Entry Generation Tool

CLI Command: attune pack index-entry <path>

Creates registry index entries from pack.yaml files, making it easy for pack authors to publish their packs.

Features:

Automatic Metadata Extraction:

  • Pack reference, label, description
  • Version, author, license
  • Keywords and runtime dependencies
  • Component counts (actions, sensors, triggers)
  • Email, homepage, repository (optional fields)

Checksum Calculation:

  • Automatically calculates SHA256 checksum
  • Uses same deterministic algorithm as validation

Install Source Generation:

  • --git-url - Generate git install source
  • --git-ref - Specify git reference (defaults to v{version})
  • --archive-url - Generate archive install source
  • Creates templates if no URLs provided

Output Formats:

  • JSON (default)
  • YAML
  • Table (pretty-printed JSON)

Example Usage:

# Generate with git source
attune pack index-entry ./my-pack \
  --git-url https://github.com/myorg/my-pack \
  --git-ref v1.0.0

# Generate with both git and archive sources
attune pack index-entry ./my-pack \
  --git-url https://github.com/myorg/my-pack \
  --archive-url https://releases.example.com/my-pack-1.0.0.tar.gz

# Generate template (URLs to be filled in)
attune pack index-entry ./my-pack

Output Example:

Validate Pack Dependencies (Code)

use attune_common::pack_registry::DependencyValidator;
use std::collections::HashMap;

// Create validator
let mut validator = DependencyValidator::new();

// Define dependencies
let runtime_deps = vec![
    "python3>=3.8".to_string(),
    "nodejs^14.0.0".to_string(),
];

let pack_deps = vec![
    ("core".to_string(), "^1.0.0".to_string()),
];

// Get installed packs
let installed_packs = HashMap::from([
    ("core".to_string(), "1.2.3".to_string()),
]);

// Validate
let validation = validator
    .validate(&runtime_deps, &pack_deps, &installed_packs)
    .await?;

if !validation.valid {
    println!("Dependency validation failed:");
    for error in &validation.errors {
        println!("  ❌ {}", error);
    }
} else {
    println!("✅ All dependencies satisfied");
}

Generate Registry Index Entry

# For a pack you're publishing
cd my-awesome-pack

# Generate index entry
attune pack index-entry . \
  --git-url https://github.com/myorg/my-awesome-pack \
  --git-ref v2.1.0 \
  --archive-url https://releases.example.com/my-awesome-pack-2.1.0.tar.gz

# Output can be added directly to registry index.json

Use Progress Reporting (Code)

use attune_common::pack_registry::{PackInstaller, ProgressEvent};
use std::sync::Arc;

let installer = PackInstaller::new(temp_dir, config)
    .await?
    .with_progress_callback(Arc::new(|event| {
        match event {
            ProgressEvent::StepStarted { step, message } => {
                println!("🔄 Starting {}: {}", step, message);
            }
            ProgressEvent::StepCompleted { step, message } => {
                println!("✅ Completed {}: {}", step, message);
            }
            ProgressEvent::Downloading { url, downloaded_bytes, total_bytes } => {
                if let Some(total) = total_bytes {
                    let percent = (downloaded_bytes * 100) / total;
                    print!("\r📥 Downloading: {}%", percent);
                }
            }
            ProgressEvent::Info { message } => {
                println!("  {}", message);
            }
            _ => {}
        }
    }));

let installed = installer.install(source).await?;
