9. End-to-End Integration Tests
Current Test Status: ⚠️ PARTIAL (Basic API tests working, advanced flows need service implementation)
Current State (Updated 2026-01-27)
Two E2E test files exist in tests/:
quick_test.py- Lightweight Python script for basic API validation ✅test_e2e_basic.py- Comprehensive pytest suite (requires pytest installation) ⚠️
Quick Test (quick_test.py) - ✅ Working:
- Health check endpoint
- User registration and authentication
- Pack endpoints (list packs)
- Trigger creation (webhook triggers)
- Rule creation (complete automation rule: trigger → action → rule)
- Can run without pytest:
python3 tests/quick_test.py - Uses test pack at
tests/fixtures/packs/test_pack
Pytest Suite (test_e2e_basic.py) - ⚠️ Requires pytest:
- 4 passing tests:
- API health check
- Authentication flow
- Pack registration
- Action creation with correct schema
- 1 skipped test:
- Manual execution (blocked - no POST /api/v1/executions endpoint exists)
- Requires:
pip install pytest requests
Test Pack Fixture ✅
Located at tests/fixtures/packs/test_pack/:
- Contains
pack.yamlwith metadata - Has
actions/echo.py- simple echo action for testing - Used by both E2E test scripts
- Successfully registers via pack registry API
Implemented E2E Test Scenarios ✅
Basic API Connectivity:
- ✅ Health endpoint validation
- ✅ User registration and login
- ✅ JWT token authentication
- ✅ Authenticated endpoint access
Pack Management:
- ✅ Pack registration from local directory
- ✅ Pack listing and retrieval
- ✅ Pack validation (metadata, dependencies)
Automation Component Creation:
- ✅ Trigger creation (webhook triggers)
- ✅ Action creation with correct schema:
- Uses
pack_ref(notpack) - Uses
entrypoint(notentry_point) - Uses
param_schemaJSON Schema (notparameters)
- Uses
- ✅ Rule creation linking triggers to actions
- ✅ Rule with conditions and action parameters
Missing E2E Test Scenarios ❌
Complete Automation Flow (Blocked - requires all services running):
- ❌ Sensor detects trigger event
- ❌ Event creation in database
- ❌ Rule evaluation creates enforcement
- ❌ Executor schedules execution
- ❌ Worker executes action
- ❌ Results captured and stored
- ❌ Notifications sent to clients via WebSocket
Manual Execution (Blocked - API not implemented):
- ❌ Direct action execution via API
- ❌ Note: POST /api/v1/executions endpoint doesn't exist
- ❌ Executions only created by executor service when rules trigger
- ❌ Future enhancement: Manual execution API endpoint
Advanced Workflows (Future):
- ❌ Human-in-the-loop (inquiry/response flow)
- ❌ Multi-step workflows (parent/child executions)
- ❌ Error handling and retry logic
- ❌ Execution cancellation
API Schema Correctness ✅
Tests validate correct API schemas discovered during debugging:
- Auth endpoints:
/auth/login(not/auth/login) - Auth fields:
loginandpassword(notusername) - Action creation:
pack_ref,entrypoint,param_schema - Pack response:
{"data": {...pack}}(not{"data": {"pack": {...}}})
Current Limitations
- No pytest installation: E2E tests can run via
quick_test.pywithout pytest - No manual execution: API doesn't support direct action execution yet
- Services not integrated: Full automation flow requires all 5 services running
- No Docker Compose setup: Multi-service testing infrastructure not ready
Recommendations
Immediate (Can do now):
- ✅ Use
quick_test.pyfor basic API validation - ✅ Expand
quick_test.pywith more scenarios (trigger, rule creation) - ❌ Install pytest for full test suite:
pip install pytest requests
Short-term (After service integration):
- ❌ Test complete automation flow with all services
- ❌ Add Docker Compose configuration for E2E environment
- ❌ Test event → enforcement → execution flow
Long-term (Advanced features):
- ❌ Manual execution endpoint and tests
- ❌ Human-in-the-loop workflows
- ❌ Multi-step workflow orchestration
- ❌ WebSocket notification testing
Testing Infrastructure Gaps
Current Gaps
-
No performance/load testing ❌
- API endpoint performance
- Database query optimization
- Message queue throughput
- Concurrent execution limits
-
No chaos/resilience testing ❌
- Service failures and recovery
- Network partition handling
- Database connection loss
- Message queue failures
-
No security testing ❌
- Authentication bypass attempts
- Authorization boundary testing
- SQL injection prevention
- RBAC enforcement
-
No property-based testing ❌
- Using frameworks like
proptestorquickcheck - Fuzz testing critical parsers
- Invariant checking
- Using frameworks like
Recommendations
- Phase 9: Add performance testing with
criterionand load testing tools - Phase 9: Add chaos testing with service kill/restart scenarios
- Phase 9: Security testing during production readiness
- Future: Consider property-based testing for critical logic
