3. Bug Fixes

Issue: SECONDS Variable Conflict

  • Problem: sleep.sh used SECONDS variable which conflicts with bash built-in that tracks shell uptime
  • Impact: Sleep tests were reporting incorrect durations
  • Solution: Renamed variable to SLEEP_SECONDS throughout the script
  • File Modified: packs/core/actions/sleep.sh
  • Status: Resolved

Issue: Empty Message Test Expectation

  • Problem: Python test expected empty output, but bash echo with empty string outputs newline
  • Solution: Adjusted test expectation to account for bash behavior
  • Status: Resolved

Issue: HTTP POST JSON Test

  • Problem: Test expected wrong response structure from httpbin.org
  • Solution: Updated test to parse nested JSON response correctly
  • Status: Resolved

4. Documentation Updates

New Documentation:

  • packs/core/tests/README.md - Complete testing guide with usage examples
  • packs/core/tests/TEST_RESULTS.md - Detailed test results and status

Technical Details

Test Methodology

Bash Test Runner (run_tests.sh):

  • Executes action scripts directly with environment variables
  • Captures stdout, stderr, and exit codes
  • Validates output contains expected strings
  • Tests for both success and expected failures
  • Color-coded results (green=pass, red=fail, yellow=skip)

Python Test Suite (test_actions.py):

  • Uses unittest framework (pytest compatible)
  • Structured test classes per action
  • setUp/tearDown lifecycle support
  • Subprocess execution with timeout
  • JSON parsing for HTTP responses
  • Timing validation for sleep tests

Test Infrastructure Features

  1. Optional Dependency Handling

    • Tests run even if PyYAML not installed
    • Tests run even if pytest not installed
    • HTTP tests skip if requests not available
    • Clear messages for skipped tests
  2. Cross-Platform Compatibility

    • Works on Linux, macOS
    • Bash-based tests use portable shell features
    • Python tests use subprocess for portability
  3. CI/CD Integration

    • Non-zero exit codes on failure
    • Structured output for parsing
    • Fast execution (<30 seconds total)
    • No interactive prompts
  4. Error Validation

    • Tests verify error messages are helpful
    • Exit codes match expected values
    • Invalid inputs properly rejected
    • Boundary conditions tested

Programmatic Testing Framework Design

Design Document Created

In response to the need for automatic test execution during pack installation, a comprehensive Pack Testing Framework design has been created:

Document: docs/pack-testing-framework.md (831 lines)

Key Features

1. Pack Manifest Extension

  • Added testing section to pack.yaml format
  • Specifies test runners by runtime type
  • Configurable test discovery methods
  • Pass/fail criteria and failure handling

2. Test Discovery Methods

  • Directory-based (recommended)
  • Manifest-based (explicit listing)
  • Executable-based (single command)

3. Test Execution Workflow

  • Automatic during pack installation
  • CLI command: attune pack test <pack>
  • Worker service executes tests in appropriate runtime
  • Results stored in database for auditing

4. Standardized Results Format

PackTestResult {
    total_tests, passed, failed, skipped,
    pass_rate, duration_ms,
    test_suites: Vec<TestSuiteResult>
}

5. Database Schema

  • pack_test_execution table for tracking test runs
  • pack_test_summary view for latest results
  • Test result history for auditing

6. CLI Integration

attune pack test ./packs/my_pack
attune pack install ./packs/my_pack # tests run automatically
attune pack install ./packs/my_pack --skip-tests

Core Pack Configuration

Updated packs/core/pack.yaml with testing section:

testing:
  enabled: true
  discovery:
    method: "directory"
    path: "tests"
  runners:
    shell:
      entry_point: "tests/run_tests.sh"
      timeout: 60
    python:
      entry_point: "tests/test_actions.py"
      timeout: 120
  min_pass_rate: 1.0
  on_failure: "block"

Implementation Phases

Phase 1: Core Framework (Design Complete)

  • Design document created
  • Core pack tests implemented
  • pack.yaml testing configuration added
  • Database schema (next step)
  • Worker test executor (next step)

Phase 2: Worker Integration (Planned)

  • Test executor in worker service
  • Output parsers (simple, JUnit XML, TAP)
  • Test result storage
  • Error handling and timeouts

Phase 3: CLI Integration (Planned)

  • attune pack test command
  • Integration with pack install workflow
  • Force/skip test options
  • Test result display

Phase 4: Advanced Features (Future)

  • API endpoints for test results
  • Web UI for viewing test history
  • Test caching and optimization
  • Parallel test execution

Benefits

  1. Fail-Fast Installation: Packs don't activate if tests fail
  2. Dependency Validation: Verify all dependencies present before activation
  3. Confidence: Tests run in actual deployment environment
  4. Audit Trail: Test results stored for compliance
  5. Quality Assurance: Encourages pack authors to write tests

Next Steps:

  1. The test infrastructure is ready for adding tests for any new actions, sensors, or triggers added to the Core Pack in the future
  2. Implement Phase 1 of the Pack Testing Framework (database schema and worker test executor) to enable programmatic test execution during pack installation
  3. Consider running these tests as part of the CI/CD pipeline to catch regressions early
