Session Summary: FIFO Integration Tests Implementation

Date: 2025-01-27
Session Focus: Integration and Stress Testing for FIFO Policy Execution Ordering
Status: COMPLETE


Objectives

Build comprehensive integration and stress tests to validate the FIFO policy execution ordering system under various scenarios including:

  • End-to-end database integration
  • High concurrency stress testing
  • Multiple worker simulation
  • Queue statistics accuracy
  • Cancellation handling
  • Cross-action independence

Work Completed

1. Created Comprehensive Test Suite

File: crates/executor/tests/fifo_ordering_integration_test.rs (1,028 lines)

8 Integration Tests Implemented:

  1. test_fifo_ordering_with_database

    • Validates FIFO ordering with real database persistence
    • 10 executions, concurrency=1
    • Tests queue stats persistence to database
    • Verifies strict FIFO ordering end-to-end
  2. test_high_concurrency_stress

    • High load stress test: 1000 executions, concurrency=5
    • Validates ordering maintained at scale
    • Measures throughput (target: >100 exec/sec)
    • Tests queue stats accuracy under load
    • Verifies memory efficiency
  3. test_multiple_workers_simulation

    • Simulates 3 workers with varying speeds
    • 30 executions with workers completing at different rates
    • Validates FIFO ordering independent of worker speed
    • Tests load distribution across workers
  4. test_cross_action_independence

    • 3 separate actions × 50 executions each (150 total)
    • Validates independent queues per action
    • Tests concurrent action execution
    • Verifies interleaved completion handling
  5. test_cancellation_during_queue

    • 10 queued executions, cancels 3 at specific positions
    • Validates cancellation removes correct executions
    • Tests queue length adjustment
    • Verifies remaining executions proceed in order
  6. test_queue_stats_persistence

    • 50 executions with periodic database checks
    • Validates memory and database stats stay in sync
    • Tests real-time stats updates
    • Verifies write consistency
  7. test_queue_full_rejection

    • Tests queue limit enforcement (max=10)
    • Validates queue full detection and rejection
    • Tests clear error messaging
    • Verifies no memory overflow
  8. test_extreme_stress_10k_executions (marked for separate execution)

    • Extreme scale: 10,000 executions, concurrency=10
    • Validates FIFO at extreme scale
    • Tests memory stability and no resource leaks
    • Measures throughput at scale (target: >300 exec/sec)
    • Runtime: ~5-10 minutes

2. Test Infrastructure

Test Helpers Created:

  • setup_db() - Database connection setup
  • create_test_pack() - Test pack creation with unique suffixes
  • create_test_runtime() - Test runtime creation
  • create_test_action() - Test action creation
  • create_test_execution() - Test execution creation
  • cleanup_test_data() - Automatic cleanup after tests

Key Features:

  • Uses real PostgreSQL database (marked with #[ignore])
  • Timestamp-based unique naming to avoid conflicts
  • Comprehensive cleanup to prevent test data pollution
  • Progress logging for long-running tests
  • Performance metrics reporting

Test Execution Instructions

Run All Integration Tests (except extreme stress):

Run Individual Test with Output:

cargo test --test fifo_ordering_integration_test test_high_concurrency_stress -- --ignored --nocapture

Run Extreme Stress Test (separate):

cargo test --test fifo_ordering_integration_test test_extreme_stress_10k_executions -- --ignored --nocapture --test-threads=1

Note: Use --test-threads=1 to avoid database contention.

  • Performance: Throughput measurement and validation
  • Memory Stability: No leaks under sustained load

  • Full Message Flow: API → Executor → Worker → Completion (end-to-end)
  • Policy Enforcer Integration: Queue + policy checks together
  • Sustained Load: Long-running production-like scenarios

Issues Encountered and Resolved

Type Mismatches

Issue: Database uses i32/i64, queue manager uses u32/u64/usize
Solution: Added explicit type casts in assertions

Import Errors

Issue: GetById trait not needed, get_by_action_id renamed to find_by_action
Solution: Updated imports and method calls to match repository API

Loop Variable Types

Issue: Loop variables defaulted to u32, comparisons expected i64
Solution: Explicitly typed loop variables as i64


Next Steps
