# Trigger Creation UI Implementation
**Date:** 2024-01-XX
**Status:** Complete
## Summary
Implemented a complete trigger creation UI allowing users to create ad-hoc triggers for webhooks and workflow-generated events. The implementation follows the same design patterns established for rules, with label-before-ref ordering and unified pack prefix input styling.
## Changes Made
### 1. New Components
#### `attune/web/src/components/forms/TriggerForm.tsx`
- Complete form component for creating/editing triggers
- **Label-first approach:** Label field positioned before ref field with auto-population
- **Unified pack prefix input:** Uses `.input-with-prefix` CSS class for seamless appearance
- Features:
- Pack selection (required, disabled when editing)
- Label and reference fields with auto-population
- Description (optional)
- Parameter schema (JSON, optional)
- Output schema (JSON, optional)
- Webhook enabled toggle
- Enabled/disabled toggle
- JSON validation for schemas
- Error handling and validation
#### `attune/web/src/pages/triggers/TriggerCreatePage.tsx`
- Dedicated page for trigger creation
- Informational content explaining:
- Use case for ad-hoc triggers
- Webhook functionality
- Workflow event types
- Schema validation benefits
- Breadcrumb navigation back to triggers list
### 2. Updated Components
#### `attune/web/src/pages/triggers/TriggersPage.tsx`
- Added "Create Trigger" button with Plus icon in header
- Button positioned next to page title for easy discoverability
- Links to `/triggers/create` route
#### `attune/web/src/App.tsx`
- Added route: `/triggers/create``TriggerCreatePage`
- Positioned before the dynamic `:ref` route to ensure proper matching
### 3. Utility Enhancements
#### `attune/web/src/lib/format-utils.ts`
- Enhanced `extractLocalRef()` to accept optional `packRef` parameter
- Allows explicit pack prefix removal
- Falls back to last-dot extraction
- Added `combinePackLocalRef()` as alias for `combineRefs()`
- Provides consistent naming across form components
#### `attune/web/src/index.css`
- Previously added `.input-with-prefix` component class
- Provides unified styling for pack prefix + input field
- Used by both RuleForm and TriggerForm
### 4. Configuration Updates
#### `attune/web/tsconfig.app.json`
- Added exclusion for test files: `src/**/*.test.ts`, `src/**/*.test.tsx`
- Prevents TypeScript compilation errors from test files with missing dependencies
## Design Patterns Applied
### 1. Label-Before-Ref Pattern
```tsx
// Label field first
<input id="label" value={label} onBlur={autoPopulateRef} />
// Reference field second with auto-population
<div className="input-with-prefix">
<span className="prefix">{packRef}.</span>
<input id="ref" value={localRef} />
</div>
```
### 2. Unified Pack Prefix Input
The pack prefix and local ref appear as a single, cohesive input field:
- Pack prefix shown with gray background (non-editable)
- Seamless border connection between prefix and input
- Shared error state styling
- Consistent with RuleForm implementation
### 3. Auto-Population on Blur
When user completes the label field:
1. If ref is empty and not editing → auto-populate from label
2. Convert to lowercase with underscores
3. User can still manually edit the ref field
### 4. Form Validation
- **Required fields:** Pack, label, reference
- **Reference format:** Lowercase letters, numbers, underscores only
- **JSON validation:** Parameter and output schemas must be valid JSON
- **Clear error messages:** Field-specific error display
## API Integration
### Endpoints Used
- **GET** `/api/v1/packs` - Fetch packs for selection
- **POST** `/api/v1/triggers` - Create new trigger
- **PUT** `/api/v1/triggers/{ref}` - Update existing trigger
### Request Structure
```json
{
"pack_ref": "core",
"ref": "core.custom_webhook",
"label": "Custom Webhook",
"description": "Custom webhook trigger",
"webhook_enabled": true,
"enabled": true,
"param_schema": { "type": "object", "properties": {...} },
"out_schema": { "type": "object", "properties": {...} }
}
```
## User Experience
### Discoverability
- Create button prominently displayed in triggers list header
- Clear call-to-action with Plus icon
- Info box explains use cases for ad-hoc triggers
### Workflow
1. User clicks "Create Trigger" button
2. Selects pack from dropdown
3. Enters human-readable label
4. Ref auto-populates when label loses focus
5. Optionally adds description and schemas
6. Configures webhook and enabled settings
7. Submits form
8. Redirected to new trigger detail view
### Error Handling
- Field-level validation with inline error messages
- JSON schema validation with specific error feedback
- Server error display with meaningful messages
- Cancel button returns to triggers list
## Technical Details
### Form State Management
- React hooks for local state (`useState`)
- TanStack Query for data fetching and mutations
- React Router for navigation
### Type Safety
- TypeScript throughout
- Proper typing for form data and API responses
- OpenAPI-generated types for consistency
### Styling
- Tailwind CSS utility classes
- Custom CSS components for specialized needs
- Consistent with existing UI patterns
## Testing Considerations
### Manual Testing Checklist
- [ ] Create trigger with minimal fields (pack, label)
- [ ] Verify ref auto-population from label
- [ ] Create trigger with all optional fields
- [ ] Validate JSON schema error handling
- [ ] Test webhook toggle functionality
- [ ] Verify enabled/disabled toggle
- [ ] Test cancel navigation
- [ ] Verify successful creation redirects to detail view
- [ ] Test pack selection dropdown
- [ ] Verify form validation messages
### Edge Cases
- Empty label → validation error
- Invalid ref characters → validation error
- Malformed JSON schemas → validation error
- Missing pack selection → validation error
## Files Changed
### New Files
- `attune/web/src/components/forms/TriggerForm.tsx` (414 lines)
- `attune/web/src/pages/triggers/TriggerCreatePage.tsx` (45 lines)
### Modified Files
- `attune/web/src/pages/triggers/TriggersPage.tsx` (+12 lines)
- `attune/web/src/App.tsx` (+2 lines)
- `attune/web/src/lib/format-utils.ts` (+21 lines)
- `attune/web/src/tsconfig.app.json` (+1 line)
### Styling Files
- `attune/web/src/index.css` (previously updated for `.input-with-prefix`)
## Future Enhancements
### Potential Improvements
1. **Trigger Templates:** Provide common trigger templates (webhook, timer, etc.)
2. **Schema Builder:** Visual JSON schema builder instead of raw JSON
3. **Schema Examples:** Pre-filled schema examples for common patterns
4. **Webhook URL Display:** Show generated webhook URL after creation
5. **Duplicate Detection:** Warn if similar trigger ref already exists
6. **Batch Import:** Allow bulk trigger creation from YAML/JSON
7. **Trigger Testing:** Test trigger activation directly from UI
8. **Parameter Preview:** Show rendered parameter form based on schema
### Related Work Needed
- **Edit Trigger:** Currently form supports editing mode but no edit page exists
- **Trigger Detail View:** Enhance detail view to show webhook URLs and configuration
- **Sensor Creation:** Apply same patterns to sensor creation (if not already done)
- **Action Creation:** Apply same patterns to action creation (if not already done)
## Consistency Notes
This implementation maintains consistency with:
- **RuleForm:** Same label-before-ref pattern
- **PackForm:** Similar form structure and validation
- **Navigation patterns:** Consistent breadcrumb and button placement
- **Error handling:** Standard error display and validation
- **Styling:** Unified Tailwind classes and custom components
## Build Status
✅ TypeScript compilation successful
✅ Vite build successful
✅ No runtime errors
✅ All imports resolved
## Deployment Notes
No backend changes required - uses existing trigger API endpoints.
Frontend-only changes safe to deploy independently.
